“A new commandment I give you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34,35
What is love? Is it the ushy-gushy feeling you get when your around or talking to your crush or significant other? Is it walking with your head in the clouds after a kiss or spending the day with them? Is it purely based on emotions. No. That’s infatuation. Love is action.
The word “love” has become so overused in our culture that we don’t even know what it means anymore. We say we love pizza, or a certain movie. No, we don’t actually love it. We may like it, but love? That word is a horrible substitution for the things that appeal to us or our taste buds. You can even be dating someone for years and not love them. You can marry them, without ever knowing what true love is.
God is love, and therefore, He is the perfect example of love. When we take our eyes off the world, and look at God and all He has done for us, that is when we start to understand what love is. How has God loved us? Well He not only sustains us by giving us the food we eat and every breath we take. He not only holds the world, and the whole galaxy in place, but He also sent His own Son, His ONLY Son, to the earth to live a sinless life so that He could die a death He did not deserve. Jesus sacrificed Himself for us miserable sinners. And He did so while we were still trapped in our sins. He didn’t do it for us after we were saved, because we were His people. No, there was no salvation before Jesus died on the cross and rose again.
We need to take God’s love for us, and demonstrate that to the world. Love. Sacrificial love. Love that knows no ends, boundaries, or conditions. Love that will lay down one’s life, so that another can live. An all-giving love. The world has not seen this type of love, but we have. It’s been given to us through Jesus’ blood, and the world will only know this love when they see it through us.
